Congressional Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Academic Competition

The House STEM App Challenge

This year marks the first annual Congressional Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Academic Competition, the “House STEM App Challenge.”  This new competition is designed to engage students’ creativity and encourage their participation in the STEM fields.  It is a nationwide event that allows high school students from across the country to compete by creating and exhibiting their software application, or “app,” for mobile, tablet or computer devices.  Arkansas’s Second Congressional District had 62 applicants register, 32 submissions and 19 apps reviewed for the competition, one of the highest in the country. The average number of submissions for other congressional districts was two.

Students who entered the competition created an account on www.challengepost.com and submitted their app’s source code online, as well as provided a YouTube or VIMEO video demo explaining their app and what they learned through the competition process.

1st Place was awarded to team members Austin Wilkerson, Aspen Mann, Briley Young and Savannah Schultz from Bryant High School for their app entitled “Survivor Blog.” This app is intended to help local child cancer patients read about, locate and connect with each other. As a 1st Place winner, their app will appear on the House Student App Challenge website later this summer.

2nd Place was awarded to team members Dillon Meaders, Dalton Bryant, Dillon Hubbard and Phillip Isom-Green from Bryant High School for their app entitled “Geostation.” This app seeks to help individuals more easily find stations for natural gas to improve convenience for owners of natural gas-powered vehicles.

3rd Place was awarded to team members Aundrea Pedraza, Tori Koos and Alex Everett from Bryant High School for their app entitled “Pocket Donate: Arkansas.” This app aims to help Arkansans suffering from hunger by providing a forum that enables individuals to donate food and spread the word about locations of local food drives and soup kitchens.
